Two weeks of rain and bricks!

We’ve had such rubbish weather for the past two weeks that I needed to put two weeks together!

I took this photo on the Monday morning as we were meant to be having this large soil pipe removed as it was asbestos and it was being moved over to create larger openings for the doors. However, the rain stopped play to that and it had to be rescheduled.

A red brick house with two white doors and several windows. There is new black pipework attached to the bricks, and a round clock next to one of the doors. A dog is visible inside behind one of the glass doors.

Next day arrived and they got to work and make the most of the kind of dryish weather! Knocking out the concrete around this pipe ready for when the asbestos company come back out.

A person in jeans and a black shirt uses a power drill on a concrete surface outside, viewed through a rain-speckled glass door. Tools, cables, and bricks hint at a possible house extension project nearby.

A construction site outside a brick building shows exposed ground, plywood sheets, stacked bricks for a house extension, a metal fence, and building materials near a glass door.

We kept getting more and more height to the blockwork and brickwork. Installing insulation in between the red bricks and blocks.

Each day we would get more and more rows of bricks, trying to keep them dry each day!

A partially constructed house extension features brick walls, insulation panels, and plastic sheeting. Building materials and sand heaps are visible next to the property, along with unfinished surfaces.

They popped up the tressels against what will be my kitchen window and it gave me an idea of what it will be like with my worktop here! Looking out over the garden which will be so nice, as it was just the garage and bush that I looked out onto.

A partially built brick wall with building materials, ideal for a house extension, overlooks a back garden with green grass, flowerbeds, a blue slide, and a white shed in the background under a cloudy sky.

Then we had a really bad storm, with high winds and lots of rain. It was so noisy and I kept hearing things banging around. But at 4:30am there was a loud bang! See this grey block pillar inbetween the openings at the front? It fell down

A partially constructed house extension features exposed grey blocks and visible building materials. The main house's red bricks and white-framed windows contrast with a wooden plank and yellow cables in the foreground.

I could see it had fallen when we looked out but it was a relief it was only that one that had gone down. It was because it wasn’t tied into the red bricks so wasn’t stable and the wind had just rushed through the gap.

A partially built brick porch house extension in front of a house, with building materials, bricks, and yellow boards on the ground, and unfinished walls surrounding the front door. Several black concrete blocks, some broken, are scattered on the ground near a red brick wall. Yellow panels and cables are also visible at the building site for a house extension, where new bricks will soon join the existing structure.

When the builders arrived they got it all rebuilt with the red bricks tied in and it’s been great since!!

We got 7 layers up today on this length, although I should have said to my daughter to hold up 7 fingers but she did that pose!!

We got our Me and Mine in the building site this month as I thought it was a perfect picture to sum this month and our family up!

It’s cool they’ve been up there with the build and we have pics of it!

This day felt like a really important day when the lintels went it! You get a real sense of room size and what it will feel like.

The front door is moving forward to this gap on the right and my son’s bedroom on the left. Love his large window to let lots of light in and the high vaulted ceiling inside will really make it feel airy and open.

More bricks! Look how lovely and neat they are, so impressed by the brickwork.

It’s all starting to get covered up now, more blockwork going in and covering over the lintels.

On the last day of week 5, the asbestos people came out and took this pipe away! 30 minutes and £650 later it’s gone!!

Spot the dog! He’s wondering why I’m on the other side of the door and he’s not stuck to my side!!

Also, another exciting thing happened on the last day…..my roof arrived!!!

All ready for week 6 of the build!

Head over to my Instagram or Facebook where you can follow daily updates and stories to see behind the scenes each week. I’m really enjoying sharing this build and I hope it gives you an idea on what goes on when building an extension if your ever thinking of having one yourself.

  4. You’ve certainly had some ups and downs this last couple of weeks. The weather has been bad but, at least progress is still happening. Nearly there……

Ooh it is starting to take some shape! The weather really does slow stuff down though. Looking forward to the next update.

    • The weather is just rubbish, hopefully we’re not far off getting inside the house and not worrying about weather!

That looks like a significant project. We are about to take down a wall between the kitchen and the dining room and it already feels overwhelming but your thing is a completely different level. Good luck!

    • Oh that will make a big difference to your space won’t it, hope it all goes smoothly
