How to make the most of an awkward bedroom
Buying a house is one thing, but turning it into a home is something completely different. When it comes down to it, it turns out that us Brits spent £41 billion on doing up our homes between 2013 and 2018. This averages out at just under £2,000 each.
While the expense may come as a shock to some, but not to others, the biggest issue of turning your house into the home is getting the décor right, and making the most of what’s there. This can be problematic at times, especially if rooms are an awkward shape.
The awkward bedroom
Bedrooms tend to be fond of the awkward shape. Unlike downstairs rooms, the bedrooms tend to be really big, really small or long or even built into the attic. Examples of the shapes you’ll usually find include:
- L-shaped
- Sloping
- Narrow
- Ones with tricky alcoves
- Trapezoid
- Triangular
The list can almost be endless. But, the trick is knowing how to decorate these rooms to their fullest potential. Below, you’ll find several ways to transform that awkward shape into the bedroom of dreams.
Built-in
If you have a room with alcoves, or a slanted roof, leading to space that can’t be used properly, then built-in storage is the best way to go. Bay windows can often be an annoying space in a bedroom. Thanks to the three windows, you’ll be afforded a lot of natural light. This means you won’t want to place huge, bulky furniture there. However, you could fill the space with a built-in seating area. Helping to use the space effectively so you have somewhere to sit while getting ready, the underneath can also be utilised for storage purposes.
Specific designs
Items such as mirrors and radiators often come in specific shapes. But, you can buy them tailor-made, meaning you could find a mirror to fit a slanted room, or an equally small space, while radiators can be bought in tall, narrow designs to fit into slimmer rooms.
So don’t despair if you have a weird shaped room, because, as you can see, there’s plenty you can do.
