Creating your own budget-friendly gold and cream prom backdrop transforms your home into a perfect DIY prom backdrop to capture those one-of-a-kind photos. And honestly, there’s something really meaningful about building it yourself. It turns the hours before prom into part of the celebration. Parents can help set up, friends can snap test photos, and everyone gets to gather around a space made with care.

In this post, we’ll walk through a creative, budget-friendly DIY prom backdrop idea that we created in our home last year. As we were hosting 12 prom teenagers, we needed a large space for those group photos. Whether you’re hosting two teens or an entire friend group, this means you’ll be ready to create a photo spot that feels just as magical as the night ahead.

This was our dining room, and we used this prom backdrop to cover my built-in desk and the large wall with the radiator on. This allowed us to create two identical full walls, making a nicer backdrop.

Using three balloon packs of multisize balloons and colours to fill up the sides, creating a cascade of balloons. Adding some to the middle section, giving interest to the middle and hiding the framework legs.

We added paper confetti to the floor, as I wanted to add a protective cover to my wood flooring, saving it from all the high heels! Adding the confetti makes it look intentional and interesting.

To do this, we needed a framework to attach all this to. We whitewashed it to blend the wood colour.

Framework For The Prom Backdrop

We used some CLS studwork timber from Wickes for the framework; we needed 6 lengths for the size we needed. Easily delivered by Wickes!

This is the only photo I got of the framework, but as we were designing an L-shaped framework to cover two walls, it was a large framework. You could make this whatever size you would like for your space.

When you’re creating the framework, make sure the feet are sturdy enough; this prevents it from toppling over. You can see above that it’s a simple wooden framework. It isn’t taking much weight from the decorations, but you won’t want it falling.

Tinsel Curtain For Gold and Cream Prom Backdrop

This tinsel curtain is fantastic; it hides so much and creates a seamless prom backdrop to the room.

I used 3 packs for every two metre length. The packs come in two-metre lengths; using three lengths means you can stagger them. This stops the gaps and gives the curtain a better look. Just go very carefully with the packs; they do rip easily. Mine had a sticky strip along the top to stick to the wood.

We used three packs of balloons. We didn’t end up using all the small ones so much, but the smaller ones are great for filling in the holes and gaps you find when building the structure.

I also recommend you get an electric balloon blower; it’s not too expensive but well worth it, since there are a lot of balloons!

I followed a TikTok user who taught us how to bundle the balloons into sets. This makes it quicker but also creates the full look of the balloon arch. Using the long 30cm balloons as ties and loops.

You can add balloon sticky dots to help fill in the gaps with the smaller balloons.

This budget-friendly gold and cream prom backdrop worked super well for our prom celebrations. Allowing us to host 12 teenagers and all the fantastic photos they took, and giving them an opportunity to celebrate prom together before they all headed off. It didn’t cost much, and we can reuse the wood for our DIY projects.

This can be easily adapted to your colour scheme, as the items I used come in many colour options!
