Well, what a birthday it was this year for my twins! A lockdown birthday, without any friends or family, without a sleepover like they love with their friends and just a day with us…..like it has been every day since lockdown!

Making It Special

I wanted to make the day special for them, but how did I manage it whilst on lockdown?

Decorated The House!

A dining room decorated for an 11th Birthday party with colourful balloons, paper leaf placemats, and tassels. The table is set for six, and the kitchen in the background also has festive Happy Birthday decorations. A dining room decorated for an 11th Birthday with green, pink, and yellow balloons arranged along the wall. The table features tropical leaf placemats and a bowl of fruit, whilst several pendant lights hang from the ceiling.

You should have seen their faces when they saw this in the morning. We managed to do it in the evening once they were in bed, which meant a late night for us, but it was worth it! It was such a big surprise and we’ve never done anything like this with the balloons before either.

I purchased the balloon arch from Amazon, and with 106 pieces it took about an hour to put together. We used a balloon pump, but found the ballon tie useless! The balloons get added onto a strip of plastic with holes in, and once threaded along the full length it creates a bundle of them like this. We then used command hooks on the wall to hold it onto the wall like this.

Two smiling children stand side by side with one arm round the other, beneath colourful balloons. Both wear sleeveless button-up outfits and have shoulder-length brown hair, celebrating a Happy Birthday against a plain wall. The garland, hanging lanterns and the leaves were all from this tropical pack and pulled the theme from the balloon arch altogether.

A kitchen decorated for a tropical 11th birthday party, with colourful balloons, paper leaf cut-outs, hanging tassels, and floral garlands. Party decorations brighten the worktop and table, and a whiteboard is visible in the hallway.

Presents!

A living room decorated for a lockdown birthday, with green, white, and yellow balloons on the carpet, wrapped presents by the fireplace, and a letter board message reading Happy Birthday Lily & Sofia.

The girls 100% understood that people might not be able to send gifts or cards to them this year, but they had some lovely friends and family who had thought of them and got them presents! They had them delivered or dropped them off on the doorstep, which was so lovely.

Hot Tub!

Three children wearing goggles smile and play in a bubbling inflatable hot tub, celebrating an 11th birthday surrounded by green plants and pink flowers climbing a grey fence in a garden.

Last year the girls saved up and purchased a Lay Z Spa hot tub and had many many fun times in it last summer. We boxed it up over the Winter, so we kept it boxed up from last year until their birthday! I thought it would make the day really exciting if it was the first time they went in it!

Tasty Food!

My kids love their food, and even more so on their birthday!! So we started the day off with waffles, strawberries and cream,

Four people, two adults and two children, sit around a dining table enjoying a meal together. The table is set with food and drinks. Colourful balloons decorate the background, celebrating an 11th birthday in a festive atmosphere.

Tuna toasties for lunch time, and a yummy BBQ for dinner!

A white plate with a grilled chicken drumstick, sausage, and a sesame seed burger bun topped with cheese and a pink flower decoration—perfect for an 11th birthday. The plate sits on floral placemats, adding cheer to this happy birthday meal.

Cake!

We have to have cake! They put in a request of a cameral cake…….So I made Caramel Cake, with Swiss Meringue Buttercream and Crushed Up Crunchie on the top!

A round cake with textured light brown icing, topped with chopped chocolate and nuts, sits on a gold cake stand—a perfect centrepiece for an 11th Birthday or Happy Lockdown Birthday celebration with green leaf-shaped placemats. Two girls stand side by side, smiling as they cut a decorated cake together at a table. Colourful balloons and leafy table decorations suggest a festive 11th Birthday celebration.

Love From A Distance

Their Grandparents popped over and sent them their birthday love from a distance. It was really sad as they always have their family with them on their birthdays. We would have had a lovely day together. But at least they got to see them, and sent some ‘air hugs’

One of the neighbours wrote on the driveway too, a lovely Happy Birthday message.

Movie Night

We finished the day with a movie night all together, the girls choice of Jumanji rented from Amazon Prime, with sweets and popcorn! Then a late night and lay in the next day!

They both said it’s been a wonderful birthday Mummy, and thank you very much for making it wonderful

That’s all I needed to hear

Preparing when they were in bed was definitely the right idea. It makes it more of a surprise. I’m trying to work out how to do a lockdown party myself for one of my daughters.
