Allergy Awareness Week runs from 20th-26th April 2015, and this year they are focusing on raising awareness of the severe end of allergies, raising awareness to the general public on the symptoms of anaphylactic shock and what to do if you need to help someone. Over two-thirds (68%) of UK adults have no idea what to do if they saw someone suffering an allergic reaction, and almost half (44%) of allergy sufferers are living in daily fear of a reaction.  Please visit the Allergy UK website to find out more information to help more people with allergies.

As both my daughters suffer from Asthma, I am always looking at ways to naturally help improve their symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Asthma is a hard one to pin down, as there are so many environmental sources out there which can trigger flare-ups.

There is a long list of triggers on the Asthma UK website which could give you a flare-up or attack, so it is really important to find your triggers and try to eliminate them or improve the environment.

Asthma UK states that up to 90% of people with Asthma are sensitive to dust mites, so this is a huge trigger but really hard to control. We cannot avoid dust, but we can try to help reduce it in the house.

  • Dust and mop with a damp cloth
  • No carpets in the bedrooms
  • Regular vacuuming with a vacuum with a HEPA filter
  • Good ventilation
  • Freezing soft toys
  • 60-degree washes
  • Air filters and air purifiers
  • Wash all bedding and blankets once a week in hot water
  • Replace old mattresses

I can see why replacing an old mattress would be a big help, dust mites and their faeces love the warm, humid cavity of mattresses, and your face is up close to the mattress (yes, I know it is making me itch too!!)

Sealy created a range of new mattresses that can help with allergies and reduce symptoms. Allergy UK has even endorsed Sealy ‘Smart Fibres’ mattresses with Purotex hold by giving them the Allergy UK’s Seal of Approval endorsement.

Sealy ‘Smart Fibres’ has Purotex® microcapsules that release friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress to reduce mould and moisture – the 100% natural solution for a fresh, hygienic and dust-mite-free mattress.

Purotex is a unique, patented technology with the following attributes:

  • PROBIOTIC antibiotic = technology of the past
  • PRO-LIFE natural process replaces traditional biocidal treatments
  • HEALTHY MICRO-FLORA active bed cleaner
  • NATURAL DEODORANT high-performing odour neutraliser
  • GUARANTEED CLEAN without washing
  • Neutralises & cleans up 100% of the dust mite allergens
  • De-hydrates the bed’s microclimate so that house dust mites lack essential water and stop the growth of fungi.
  • Suppresses noxious bacterial colonies with no bacterial immunity or antibiotic resistance

Sealy offers a great range of mattresses offering the Sealy ‘Smart Fibres’ technology, so you won’t be disappointed in the choice of designs and styles.
