The kitchen is one of the (or perhaps the actual) busiest rooms in your home, but the problem is that it doesn’t always work for you – there are drawers that jam, cupboards full of junk, and sometimes it even the layout that’s an issue and the room just isn’t as functional as it should be.

So how can you make your kitchen work for you? Keep reading to find out.

Start With How You Actually Use It

Before you get started looking at paint colours and taps, it’s wise to take a good look at what’s going on in your kitchen on a day-to-day basis – do you cook full meals every night, for example, or are you more of a quick snack kind of person? Do you need space to meal prep, store kids’ lunchboxes, or entertain friends at the weekend? The fact is that a kitchen that works for you has to start with you understanding what you want from it.

From there, it’s time to think about the flow. The old ‘kitchen triangle’ rule is a classic for a reason – if your sink, cooker, and fridge are too far apart (or awkwardly crammed together), you’ll find it so much harder to use the kitchen, and that’s going to put you off going in there unless you really need to. If you’re able to make it easier to move around, even if it just means rearranging a few things, that’s going to improve the room massively.

Make Sure Style Meets Function

Just because you’re aiming for functionality, that doesn’t mean your kitchen can’t also look amazing, and these days there are options that mean you can combine modern layouts with beautiful design, which is perfect. One thing that’s often a good choice is contemporary in frame kitchens because they’re a mixture of traditional craftsmanship and updated styles that always look great, so you get the best of both worlds.

With these kitchens, everything feels solid, beautifully made, and totally practical, and it’s an ideal choice if you love a classic look but you want something that doesn’t feel dated or too fussy. And if you can also add some clever storage solutions, you’ll end up with the ideal kitchen.

Don’t Forget The Details

The little things are going to matter more than you think when it comes to making your kitchen work for you – that means things like drawer inserts, pull-out larders, integrated bins, and so on. Now they might not sound all that exciting, especially when you think about choosing cabinet doors, flooring, lighting, tiles, and so on, but they’re actually the details that will make the kitchen easier to live in, so they’re important to get right and not ignore.

And in the end, even if the only thing you do for now is to clear out an overflowing cupboard, that still counts as a step towards making your kitchen work for you, so take it as slowly as you need to. Your kitchen doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’, it just needs to be right for you.
