After giving Lily’s small bedroom room a makeover and changing the colour scheme, we decided that the pink chair doesn’t quite fit in the room! We were working with Yorkshire Fabric Shop on a project for her bed headboard, but we had some leftover. So it was a perfect opportunity to use it on her desk chair too.

Fabric featuring a repeated pattern of realistic brown deer with antlers on a light background, next to a beige textured surface. Perfect to upholster an IKEA Jules chair, the fabric is partially unrolled.

Upholster An IKEA Jules Desk Chair

A pink upholstered desk chair with a backrest featuring two columns of circular holes, silver legs, and black castors sits on a beige carpet in front of a light-coloured sofa with patterned cushions.

I wanted to try and use the items we had in the house as I do try not to throw things away. Try and use them, or pass them onto a new home instead. So we found a dining room chair cushion that fitted nicely on the base of the chair and curved over the end of the chair. We also had some carpet underlay that worked as a back to the chair!

For your DIY projects, explore a range of upholstery fabrics for your cushions or furniture. These fabrics offer diverse designs, textures, and colours to match your style. Consider repurposing old clothes or blankets as cushion covers instead of discarding them.

But you could attach anything that you have around the house, or purchase some wadding to go around the chair.

A floor chair with a padded white seat and a backrest covered in light purple cushioning—similar in comfort to an IKEA Jules Desk Chair—is positioned on a beige carpet, partially open and placed at an angle.

Cutting it to size, enough to go over the top and down to the bottom of the chair.

A person uses scissors to cut along a marked line on a large sheet of light purple fabric, preparing to upholster an IKEA Jules desk chair, with the material spread out on a beige carpeted floor.

We used an electric staple gun on this project as it was stapling through the fabrics to the wood.

Staple the cushion near the back

A pink IKEA Jules chair with circular cut-outs on the backrest and a white, tufted cushion seat sits on a light-coloured carpet. Part of a person's knee in jeans appears in the top right corner, suggesting it's being used as a desk chair.

Curving it around the end and making a soft edge to the chair.

Staple the cushioning to the back of the chair

A cushioned floor chair with a beige seat and purple backrest—similar to an upholstered IKEA chair project—sits on a carpet next to a blue electric stapler. An amp and more cushions are visible in the background.

Go all the way under and around but make sure you keep the screw ends sticking out and don’t let them go back through!!

A chair seat, likely from an IKEA Jules desk chair, is flipped upside down on a carpeted floor. The pink bottom panel is visible, with upholstery partially removed and purple foam padding exposed. A staple gun sits to the right.

Think about your corners, they must run smoothly so you can see them through the fabric

A close-up of a hand pinching and lifting the edge of a rolled-up piece of foam padding with a purple outer layer, revealing multicoloured layers inside—perfect for an upholstering tutorial or when you upholster an IKEA Jules desk chair.

Cut your fabric so you have plenty left around the edges to fold around the chair

A person is cutting a large sheet of white paper with brown reindeer prints on a beige carpet, using red-handled scissors—perhaps preparing to upholster an IKEA Jules desk chair for a festive DIY project.

It was really tricky to get the fabric pulled tight and neatly folded. So do you best and see what works with the cushioning you have. Staple all around and cut off the excess fabric.

We took the fabric up and over the top, creating a fold along the edge as we felt this covered the back, look the neatest way and made a cushion all the way down.

We created a flat seam line along the bottom edge. As the back of the seat is shaped it was quite tricky to get it flat and fitted. So we went with a baggy look to the fabric instead!

Finished Upholstered IKEA Jules Desk Chair

Lily is over the moon with her new chair, it’s comfy, the cushions don’t fall off anymore and it matches her room better. I might spray up the metal legs at some point too! I love that fabric! It looks like a completely different chair, and so much more comfortable too.

  2. What a transformation! I wish I had the patience to sit and do something like this 🙂

  3. What a great idea. You’ve all done a fab job too and it’s great that it matches her headboard. Mine are a little young for desks at the moment but will keep this in mind for when we need them x

    • It’s great to have a space for them like this when they’re older and school work to do!

Wow, what a difference that makes. Definitely, a budget friendly way to improve a chair. 🙂

  5. I love how you have done the chair to match the head board. I was looking at staple guns in eBay last night and have also been looking at fabric, I think it will end up costing about £80 to cover our sofa.
