After giving Lily’s small bedroom room a makeover and changing the colour scheme, we decided that the pink chair doesn’t quite fit in the room! We were working with Yorkshire Fabric Shop on a project for her bed headboard, but we had some leftover. So it was a perfect opportunity to use it on her desk chair too.
Upholster An IKEA Jules Desk Chair
I wanted to try and use the items we had in the house as I do try not to throw things away. Try and use them, or pass them onto a new home instead. So we found a dining room chair cushion that fitted nicely on the base of the chair and curved over the end of the chair. We also had some carpet underlay that worked as a back to the chair!
For your DIY projects, explore a range of upholstery fabrics for your cushions or furniture. These fabrics offer diverse designs, textures, and colours to match your style. Consider repurposing old clothes or blankets as cushion covers instead of discarding them.
But you could attach anything that you have around the house, or purchase some wadding to go around the chair.
Cutting it to size, enough to go over the top and down to the bottom of the chair.
We used an electric staple gun on this project as it was stapling through the fabrics to the wood.
Staple the cushion near the back
Curving it around the end and making a soft edge to the chair.
Staple the cushioning to the back of the chair
Go all the way under and around but make sure you keep the screw ends sticking out and don’t let them go back through!!
Think about your corners, they must run smoothly so you can see them through the fabric
Cut your fabric so you have plenty left around the edges to fold around the chair
It was really tricky to get the fabric pulled tight and neatly folded. So do you best and see what works with the cushioning you have. Staple all around and cut off the excess fabric.
We took the fabric up and over the top, creating a fold along the edge as we felt this covered the back, look the neatest way and made a cushion all the way down.
We created a flat seam line along the bottom edge. As the back of the seat is shaped it was quite tricky to get it flat and fitted. So we went with a baggy look to the fabric instead!
Finished Upholstered IKEA Jules Desk Chair
Lily is over the moon with her new chair, it’s comfy, the cushions don’t fall off anymore and it matches her room better. I might spray up the metal legs at some point too! I love that fabric! It looks like a completely different chair, and so much more comfortable too.
Thanks, so much comfier for her
What a transformation! I wish I had the patience to sit and do something like this 🙂
Louise x
It was surprisingly quick!
What a great idea. You’ve all done a fab job too and it’s great that it matches her headboard. Mine are a little young for desks at the moment but will keep this in mind for when we need them x
It’s great to have a space for them like this when they’re older and school work to do!
Wow, what a difference that makes. Definitely, a budget friendly way to improve a chair. 🙂
Glad I gave it a go and didn’t throw it away!
What a transformation! It looks great. I love the deer fabric.
Pretty fabric isn’t it, thanks
I love how you have done the chair to match the head board. I was looking at staple guns in eBay last night and have also been looking at fabric, I think it will end up costing about £80 to cover our sofa.
Oh that’s a great price to cover your sofa, be like brand new!
What a fantastic transformation. I love that the chair will match the headboard.
Thank you very much
