Looking for a review of the Tefal DT9530 Handheld Steamer? I reviewed both this one and the DT9100 a little while ago, so now I can compare both of them together and see which one performs the best. Both these handheld steamers are great for getting creases out quickly and are easy to store.

Why Purchase The Tefal DT9530 Handheld Steamer?

I purchased the Tefal DT9100 just over a year ago as I wanted a handheld steamer to make keeping on top of the ironing easier, I liked the look of the large upright steamers, but I don’t have space for that. So having a handheld steamer worked well for our family of five, and I have loved it. It’s quick, easy to use and gets the creases out so well, it really is one of the best clothes steamers on the market.

So when I saw they now made the Tefal DT9530 I wondered what the difference was, it looked like it was the next model up, with extra steam bonnets and I thought it would be good to compare the Tefal DT9530 and Tefal DT9100 together to see which one was best.

Tefal DT9530 Handheld Steamer vs Tefal DT9100 Handheld Steamer

  • Straight away you can see that you don’t get the door hanger included in this box, this is a big mistake as I find this so useful and it’s always up on the utility room door ready to steam the clothes quickly. I feel it protects my door from the steam, and even though it wasn’t that great at gripping the items, it allowed them to hang and the steam to flow through the clothes better. If you had just purchased the Tefal DT9530 on its own, you wouldn’t have this door hanger, you can purchase this on the Tefal website though.
  • You also have some different steam brush heads to go onto the steamer bonnet, the Tefal DT9100 has one head for delicate fabrics, and one fabric brush head for normal fabrics. The Tefal DT9530 has three changeable steamer heads, the silver grey one is crease removal, the blue one is the clean brush which is the lint remover, and removes hair and fluff, and then you have the scented brush head where you can add the perfume diffuser to make your clothes crease free and smell nice.
  • There is also a steamer head storage box which is very useful for holding the changeable heads.
  •  As soon as I plugged them in I saw the cable length difference, I have a place where I hang the garment hanger and the Tefal DT9100 reaches perfectly with extra, but the Tefal DT9530 didn’t reach, it was very annoying! So make sure your cable length reaches the space where you will be doing your clothes steaming. DT9100 is approx 3 metres long vs DT9530 is 2.5 metres long.
  • The Tefal DT9530 is missing the trigger lock button at the front, which allowed you to let go of the trigger button, much easier on your hands if the lock button is there.
  • The Tefal DT9530 heated up slightly quicker, but only a 10-15 seconds difference really and the steam output started up at the same time once the trigger button was held down.
  • Three levels of steam on the Tefal DT9100, and the Tefal DT9530 only has two, I didn’t really notice much difference when using it in how much steam came out though. Maybe more direct on the DT9530 but not much difference.
  • There is a weight difference between them, Tefal DT9100 is 3kg and the Tefal DT9530 is 1.23kg, so travelling on business trips it would be better to have the lighter-weight item.
  • The Tefal DT9100 tends to spit out a bit of water which gets left on the fabric, the Tefal DT9530 didn’t do this once.

My first feeling on the difference is I would love to have all the best bits from each in one handheld steamer, all of them have useful accessories, and combining them together would be perfect.

Interchangeable Steamer Heads

The Tefal DT9530 comes with three interchangeable heads that magnetically attach to the steamer bonnet, I loved this to start with as they went on much easier and didn’t struggle to unclip them. However, it also meant they flipped off the steamer bonnet really easily when you were using the handheld steamer.

The silver grey steamer head is for crease removal, it glides over the fabric, pushing creases out. I really liked this steamer head compared to the brush style one on the Tefal DT9100, it seems to glide nicer on the fabrics and doesn’t collect fabric dust either.

The blue and white steamer head is perfect for removing dust, hair and lint from fabrics, and it really does a great job of that! I used it on the dog bed, and it pulled up all his hairs over it, but also as it’s steaming it’s refreshing the fabric too and removing smells.

The netted style black steamer head is the head where you can insert the perfume diffuser, which combined with the steamer head and your favourite scent, you can refresh your clothes, remove creases and make them small wonderful.

How Do You Use The Tefal DT9530 Handheld Steamer?

Using the Tefal DT9530 handheld steamer is really easy, you need to fill up the large water tank to the water line, it holds 200mls of water which is a good amount of water. The length of use is really dependent on the type of fabrics your using it on, and how many stubborn creases there are in your items. If you’re using it on heavier fabrics with deep-set wrinkles you won’t get as long, but delicate materials will remove creases quickly and use less steam output.

Once heated up, plug in using a normal UK plug socket, and press the ON button on the front, this will make the button light up and flash whilst it’s heating up. This took about 15-20 seconds to heat up, which is really quick. When you lift up the Tefal DT9530 there is a trigger button at the front where you hold it, you hold this down to start the steam production, and you are ready to start using to get minutes of continuous steaming, and crease-free clothes!

A hand holding a white and blue Tefal DT9530 handheld garment steamer in front of a pink and purple scalloped patterned background. The device has two illuminated button icons near its top, perfect for a quick review.

I found the correct action to use on the items of clothing, is starting from the top and dragging the clothes downwards. This pulls out the creases, and also allows the steam to go upwards. You really need to be careful of the steam, it is very hot and the steam will naturally go upwards, and if you hold your item of clothing at the top it will burn. You can purchase a heat protection glove, which I am seriously considering doing as I have done it one too many times!

You can use the Tefal DT9530 on a wide range of fabrics, the heavyweight fabrics like denim mean you may have to go over the fabrics a few times to get the creases out.

Curtains and Upholstery

I used the Tefal DT9530 on my curtains, fabric blinds, and sofas, adding the lint removal steam head means I could get rid of the dog hair that builds up around. I was so surprised at how much came off that I didn’t realise was there! This is going to naturally remove the dog smell in the house, and along with the steam, it will help refresh the fabrics.

Sanitise

I touched on the fact that the Tefal DT9530 states it kills 99.9%* of virus earlier, this is a lovely feature of using a handheld steamer, you can refresh kids’ toys, dogs’ toys and all by just giving them a quick blast of steam.

Weight and Ease

I like the idea of being able to take these travelling with you, weighing in a 1.23kg this is lightweight enough for you to place in your bags and not take up too much of your weight allowance. You can easily refresh your clothes and ease of use on busy days, not relying on hotels and destinations to have something to remove creases from your suitcase items.

Results

So you really want to see the results, I am pleased with the crease removal using the Tefal DT9530, it removes creases well, and with ease.

What Didn’t I Like?

I didn’t like the shorter cable, no garment hanger included and also how the steamer heads would just pop off easily when using the item.

What Handheld Steamer Would I Buy?

This is such a hard question as I like both of the Tefal handheld steamers for different reasons!! I wish Tefal could combine both of them together and make a perfect one! If I had to pick one, it would be the Tefal DT9530, as I prefer the steamer heads and the lint remover, and I would purchase the additional steam garment door hanger.

I’ve really loved the ease of the Tefal DT9530 handheld steamer and how quickly I can smarten up items of our clothing, and will be using this so much!

  1. This looks like an awesome steamer, thanks for sharing. We currently have a standing one but it was just a cheapie from KMart. I don’t suppose you know how well this works compared with a larger floor unit please?
