Our homes are one of the most precious things to us, and keeping them safe is so important. So here are some ways you can keep your home safe and more secure.
Ways To Increase Your Home Security
Lighting
I think one of the biggest pieces of home security advice is to keep your home well lit. Placing lighting around your home outside keeps your house well lit and fewer places to hide. Place lighting up the driveway, in front of your front door, in your garden and down alleyways. You could install timed lighting systems, floodlights on sensors and permanent lighting.
We have Philips Hue lighting in our home and I love it, I can set my lighting to a routine but also I can random my routines. So they turn on around my time I have set, rather than set times. You can control all of these from your phone, no matter where you are.
CCTV
There are so many different types of CCTV systems you can purchase now and you don’t even need to get in a professional to install them. You can purchase your own sets of CCTV to install around your home and with them being wireless you don’t need to worry about electrics to them either.
I love being able to view my home from my phone wherever I am, I can check in and make sure it’s all safe and even be alerted when there is a motion detected. I could then turn all my outdoor lights on and hopefully scare them away!
Home Alarm System
Being able to secure your house when you’re not at home is so reassuring. Setting a home alarm system up in your home not only works as a deterrent when they can see one is installed it makes a great big noise if set off! When we had our installed I couldn’t believe how loud it was, everyone will look if that goes off!
Radio Left On
Leave the radio on or TV on when you go out. I used to do this for the dog and the number of delivery people who would the door over and over again thinking we were in when we weren’t!
Smart Doorbell
So how did I know the delivery people did this? Well, I have a Ring smart doorbell that allows me to see who is at my door. It starts recording whenever it detects movement and when it’s pressed. It alerts me on my phone and I can live view who is there. I can even tell the delivery guys where to put my parcels, or tell the Sainsburys delivery guys I am on my way when they’re early! When I’ve had some dodgy people come to the door, they see the doorbell but won’t press it knowing it records them and knock instead. But they don’t realise that it’s already filmed them walking up to the door!
Dog Bowls
Place dog bowls outside your home! I have a dog so have one anyway but by placing a dog bowl outside your back door someone is going to think you have a dog at home. Mine lets a rather large bark out when he hears anyone outside our house, so they don’t want anything alerting people to their movements outside.
Double Locking Doors
Expert locksmith SF Locksmiths Doncaster recommends the use of anti-snap locks. Brands such as Ultion are high security locks that can be fitted on uPVC and composite doors and prevent lock-snapping along with other methods of forced entry. These locks makes it extremely difficult for intruders to break an entry.
This is something our local police are really pushing at the moment. Make sure you double-lock your doors when you go out. People with UPVC doors are just shutting the doors behind them and not lifting the handles up and turning the key. This means burglars are just sliding in tools and pushing opening the latches. No locks are locking in and it’s so easy to open.
We have a smart door lock on our front door which means the door handle has to be lifted up to lock the door, meaning it’s locked properly every time we leave the house.
Smart Home
Be smart with your home, start looking into your smart home systems. We have some great smart home items in our home that I think really help with keeping our home safe. I love the fact that it is wireless and so easy to install yourself. Being able to receive alerts on my phone when I’m not even at home is reassuring.
No Hiding Places
Think about how exposed the front of your house is? Do you have large hedges or bushes that people could hide behind and not be seen from the road? Bring the height down so your home can be easily seen by your neighbours or people passing by.
Locks
Make sure you lock everything up, not only your house, windows and doors. But bikes and sheds to keep everything secure.

Being a parent of 3 I view home security as super important. We have an alarm and never leave windows or balcony doors open when we go out.

Great ideas. Dogs are off-putting so I love the idea of leaving the dog bowls outside. I think CCTV is also something to really consider in the future.

I would really like a smart doorbell. We live in a densely populated area with so many delivery people coming and going that anyone scoping for nefarious purposes would not stand out. Thanks for reminding me that this would be a good security measure.
