When it comes to keeping your home organised I think the biggest thing to get right is home storage. If you renovate your home, you need to plan home storage ideas when designing your rooms.

Home Storage Tips

I have clubbed together with some other bloggers who have shared their home storage tips for you, and why they think it helps keep the house organised.  I don’t know about you, but if I have a organised home I feel much happier and I don’t panic as much when I can’t find something, or running out the door and need to grab something quickly, I know just where it is! I know home storage has played a big part in my family home organisation, and it helps the children as well as they can be more independent and know where to put things. Also, can you imagine trying to pack up a family home if trying to sell your home, staying organised will help the removals company keep your items organised too when moving house.

Cupboard Storage

Not every cupboard in the kitchen comes with particularly useful spaces or at least spaces that can store as much as you want to. So using modular systems to create your own pan drawers and to fit in unusually shaped items is a great way of expanding your storage space.   Previously the cupboard you can see in the photo had one shelf and now it stores a lot of essential kitchen equipment, two sets of pans, a steamer, a wok, a bamboo steamer, glass bowls, and a hand mixer, a rice cooker, and a blending stick! What’s key is being creative and using every single inch to make it work. You’ll just need an electric screwdriver or drill to attach the runners to the edge of the existing cupboard and wire baskets that fit into them. It’s the perfect way to utilize difficult-to-manage spaces!

Mounted Tension Rod for Spray Bottles

House cleaning takes a lot of time and dedication. Right cleaning products and good organization will save you a lot of time in the process. It’s helpful to have cleaning supplies at hand and on display should you need to clean up a spill.

A tension rod is a universal tool that lets you double your kitchen or bathroom cabinet storage space by hanging spray bottles by their handles. It will take just a few minutes and a few bucks to add an extra layer of storage.

Tension rods are available in many lengths and widths. Take measurements and pick one depending on the available space. Extendable rods have an adjustable design, and you can tighten them to the desired tension. They are super easy to install! All you have to do is twist and stretch to fix the rod between the cabinet walls. You can get even more creative, and get extra S-hooks for the brushes, so all your cleaning supplies will be hanging on the rod.

Attic Ladder

Many homeowners find that their attics are ideal for storing holiday decorations, seasonal clothing, and other items that are not used regularly. However, accessing an attic can be difficult, especially if there is no ladder or stairway leading to the space.

We installed a Fakro attic ladder in our hallway recently and it has made it so easy to access the attic that it has now become a usable space for storing items we don’t need regularly like our Christmas tree, non-seasonal clothes, suitcases, sentimental items, and books.

It’s also a handy place to stash gifts or other items you don’t want the kids finding at a certain time of the year. Attic ladders come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit your needs, and they can be installed fairly easily by a qualified builder or even DIYed if you’re handy enough.

Bottle Stacking

These days new fridges often come with racking for holding bottles in the body of the fridge. But whilst they are great for stopping bottles from rolling around, at the same time they take up way too much room for the number and size of bottles they can store.

We always have a bunch of Soda Stream bottles in the fridge, as well as a wine bottle or two, and so we went looking for a better solution and found these stacking containers. Not only do they hold our bottles in place, they can be stacked as high as you wish. They securely lock together to ensure no droppage and fit neatly in the body of the fridge. We have had them for several years now without any damage to them or to the bottles. They are also totally portable to any size refrigerator. I can no longer imagine life without them.

Organising The Garage

Eight years ago, we moved to Australia from the UK. This involved a lot of decluttering so we could ship our belongings to Australia. I swore that we’d never end up with so much junk again, yet a couple of years later we found ourselves swamped with ‘stuff’ all over again.

Our Australian home doesn’t have storage like we had in the UK (our loft isn’t usable space as it’s too hot up there, not to mention spiders…) so we added racking to our garage walls. It has been a game-changer! Some garages have battery cabinets since some tools and machines need batteries and this is beneficial to all garages, learn more here

My tips for adding storage shelves to your garage are to measure the wall space and consider which combination of units will maximise the space (they come in a range of dimensions so you should be able to rack out the entire wall without wasting any space. Consider the depth of the units too, as you need the garage doors to be able to open and you need to make sure you can still get your cars in!

When it comes to the height of the shelves, don’t go too high as you’ll want to put things on the top shelf and this is an ideal place for large, light items like suitcases.

When it comes to organising your things to go on the shelves, go through everything and declutter it. Be brutal. Do you really need to keep it? If you do, categorise it. We have sections for: DIY, car maintenance, memory boxes, sports, and beach. Now if we need to find a tennis racket, we know it will be on the sports shelf! We put our beach gear on the rack near the garage door which makes grabbing what we need for beach days so easy.

It wasn’t too expensive to install garage racking but it has made a huge difference to how organised our home feels.

Home Office In A Closet

Home offices are a great way to get work done in a quiet, dedicated space. However, finding room for a home office can be a challenge, especially in small homes.

One of the best ways to maximize storage space in your home is to utilize every nook and cranny, including closets. With a little bit of creativity, a closet can easily be transformed into a functional office space. For example, a simple desk can be mounted to the wall, leaving plenty of room for a chair. Alternatively, a fold-down table can be installed, which can be easily stowed away when not in use.

Shelves can be added to store office supplies, books, and files. And a coat of paint can brighten up the space and make it feel more inviting. With a little bit of effort, even the most unlikely places can be turned into beautiful and practical storage solutions.

Large Hook To Hang Dog Leads and Collars

For dog owners, keeping dog accessories organised in the home can be a real challenge. Dog toys, food, and dog coats all need somewhere to be stored. But dog leads, collars, and harnesses present a unique challenge as they tend to get tangled so quickly. So one of the best and easiest ways to keep your pet leads and collars organised is with a hook fixed to the wall by the door. A single large hook with multiple prongs or two hooks is best to make it easy to store multiple leads and collars.

Simply hang the leads and collars on the hook and grab them on your way out for a walk. Not only does a hook prevent an unorganised tangled mess in a storage box. Hanging the leads on a hook helps them dry more quickly and makes them easy for everyone to find next time you take pup out for a walk.

Hanging Shelves

One of the best ways to keep homes organised is to use every bit of space you can in existing cupboards. Often, cupboards can have more hanging space than you need and not enough shelves. A way to fix this problem is to buy hanging shelves which hang directly on the hanging rod and fold down to create many different openings that you can use as an extra set of shelves.

What’s extra good about this as a storage system is that they usually fold up flat when you aren’t using them so they are easy to store if you don’t need to use it for a little while. They are also very affordable. They can work especially well in cupboards for younger kids and babies who don’t usually need much hanging space, and you can buy ones with small shelving spots so it’s perfect for storing their little clothes.

Paperwork Organisation

A great way to organize your most important paperwork is in a binder. Depending on the size of your family and how much paperwork each person has, a family can share 1 binder or each member of the family can have their own important paperwork binder.

Clear sheet protectors are key to keeping an important paperwork binder organized. Insert the sheet protectors into the binder and fill them up so that every piece of important paperwork can be easily seen. It is easy to take the sheet protectors out and move them to a different spot in the binder when needed.

Having 1 binder with the family’s important documents such as birth certificates, a marriage license, and social security cards makes it easy to find everything needed quickly when it is time to move, apply for a passport, or register for school.

Binders with clear sheet protectors are also a great way to store paperwork that isn’t as important but is sentimental such as the kid’s drawings, report cards, and school work.
