When it comes to designing and planning your new lighting for your new extension or build, it’s a minefield! There are so many options and so many places to purchase lights from. But it’s one of the first jobs your need to plan for the build as the electricians need to know the costings, how many options you’re having, and where they’re going. When the build is progressing you can change your mind, just give them a warning and time to add it in, as it’s always much more costly to add in after the build than at the time of placing new wiring.

Planning

You need to start off planning what the rooms are being used for, and then sit down and have a rough idea of what electrical items are going into the room. Once you have the list of these, place them around the room where you think they may go. This way you know your sockets, and also what areas of the room you need lighting.

You need to look at the types of lighting options out there. When I was planning the lighting for our new kitchen extension I knew I didn’t want loads of spotlights and bright lights, I don’t have these around the house normally but I knew the kitchen needed to have practical lighting as well as functional lighting.

We decided to have 6 spotlights for the kitchen area,

Custom Built Lighting From Creative Cables

I searched high and low for gold lighting pendants, and at the time gold was just coming into fashion again, so I didn’t have too many options. But I came across Creative Cables which allowed you to build your own custom built lighting and had so many options (they have even more now!) they had brass ceiling roses and brass lamp holders which I knew was perfect for what I wanted. You could then pick the type of electric cable and choose from a large range of colours. It was perfect!

I had already picked the beautiful glass Ilaria pendant lamp shade in Blush Grey from Made.com which matched my very impressive chandelier that matched these and hangs over the dining table.

Making Up The Pendants From Creative Cables

As these are custom built lighting from Creative Cables you will need to make these up when they arrive yourself, my electrician fitted these for me, so I don’t have any instructions on how it goes but Creative Cables have a great video to show you.

But once you’ve made up the ceiling rose and cabling, you can just fit your pendant shades. On the Made.com website, it never had the dimensions of the hole that the lamp holder needed to fit. When I fitted them glass shades, 2 out of 3 didn’t fit the lampholder! It was too tight to push through, so I had to sit for a good couple of hours and very very slowly file down the glass opening on the shade! It was pretty nerve racking as it could have shattered but everything matched these now, so needed them to work! I managed it in the end and was able to hang them up.

These give off a great amount of light on the large worktop underneath and we often just have these on and not the spotlights.

I like the pretty patterns they make on the ceiling and walls too.

Overall Thoughts On The Creative Cables Custom Lights

I am really pleased with the quality of these light fittings, Creative Cables have a fantastic range of different colours and options, and I love that they can suit so many interiors because of this. Not many people are going to have this combination of lights (well they might now they’ve seen them!!) so you’re making your home unique to you and the style you love.

That is such a clever idea. I’ve never thought to make my own lights. You can design them how you want though which is a bonus.

  2. What gorgeous lighting – I’ve always wanted to get some pendant lights like that for our kitchen. Definitely something to think about for future tweaks we will be making.
