Before we had our house extension we didn’t have a separate lounge as it was a lounge dining room. But when we built the kitchen dining room across the back of the house, we had a wall built across. This made a new lounge at the front of the house, but we also gained an alcove either side of the fireplace.

I’ve always wanted to have this symmetrical look to the lounge as it gave me the opportunity to add some artwork to this space.

A cosy living room reveal with a small electric fireplace beneath a wooden mantelpiece, a large mirror above it, two silhouette portraits on either side, a grey sofa, potted plant, and light streaming through sheer curtains.

Although once my new lounge was created and decorated, I felt the alcoves needed some lighting in. In the evenings this gave us a warm feeling to the room and makes it all cosy. So if I was adding some lighting here, some artwork underneath would be great.

A cosy living room with a stone fireplace, a lit stove, a large mirror above the mantelpiece, two framed Personalised Silhouette Prints, a grey sofa with cushions, and warm ambient lighting.

That’s when I thought about the Personalised  Silhouette Prints and could I make them myself?

How I Made Personalised Silhouette Prints

  • First off take a photo on a clean background, and make sure there isn’t anything in the background to make it easier for yourself.
  • I used a white background, but then make sure you wear contrasting colour clothing, with clean lines.
  • Looking sideways
  • I tied my hair up as this works better once you put it in the photo editor

A man with short dark hair wearing a black hoodie over a blue collared shirt stands in profile against a plain light-coloured background, perfect for creating striking Personalised Silhouette Prints.

  • I used Adobe Photoshop to edit the photo
  • Once loaded into here, crop the photo to the size and selection of the person you would like in the image. I was using an A4 size print in my frame
  • Use the magic wand cursor and click on the white space outside of the person
  • You’ll see the area get selected, use the shift key to click on areas that the magic wand hasn’t selected. You can keep doing this until the dotted line is perfectly around the person.

  • Then use the paintbrush to fill the background to white
  • Choose ‘select’ on the top menu and click on ‘inverse’. This selects the person area
  • Then you can select the paintbrush again and choose black, click on the person and it will change to black. Keep clicking until it goes completely black.
  • You can use the eraser to rub out any black bits you don’t want

Framed artwork of a person's side profile silhouette in black on white paper, hanging on a mauve wall with part of a green plant visible in the bottom left corner—perfect for your pink and gold lounge reveal.

When then created a picture frame mount to go around the print, making a much bigger framed photo. But you could make these personalised silhouette prints any size you want and once saved off you could get them professionally printed at any size.

  1. Looks great! The lighting really sets them off too. I quite fancy doing this, plus a silhouette has the added bonus of not showing my wrinkles!
