Pallets can be such a useful item, so don’t think about throwing them away when you have something delivered on one. Keep it as I am sure you’ll find a little project to make something with it!

During the lockdown, my daughter was challenged by the school to make a bug house from items you have around the garden and house.

Hey that pallet at the top of the garden would work brilliantly for a bug house!

So we got onto building a bug house from a pallet to give the bugs a little cosy area to hide in the flowerbeds.

Two red bricks with holes are resting on top of a wooden pallet placed on grass in bright sunlight—perfect materials if you’re wondering how to make a simple bug hotel for your garden!.

The only item I purchased was a couple of these bricks with holes in them, everything else was things we’ve collected on walks and in the garden.

How To Make A Bug House From A Pallet

  1. Take the pallet apart so you’re left with the sections of wood and blocks
  2. Figure out your sizing and work with the sizing of pallet lengths
  3. Screw with exterior screws the longest side sections with a top and bottom section
  4. We used the pallet blocks as supports for the shelves and areas to section off
  5. Add in shelves
  6. Attach a small bracket at the top to attach to the fence/wall to stop it from falling over
  7. Fill up with twigs, pinecones, and anything that bugs love to live in!
  8. Then position it and leave it alone

Here it is after a year or so! The plants have grown up around it more which the bugs will love. We found the pinecones fell out easily, so popped up netting in front. They need filling again now though, but lots of spider webs which is good as they don’t get disturbed here when I’m gardening. A little space for them to hide.

A DIY bug hotel made from wood, bricks, and pallets with wire mesh sections stands against a garden shed wall, surrounded by leafy green plants and flowers in bright sunlight.

This is a really simple project to do with the kids, the wood is rough and doesn’t need to be accurate, so you can get them screwing this all together and trying their hand at a woodwork project. Also great for them to add little bits and bobs to it as time goes along too.

That is such a great idea. I love the way you have made this one. It looks really pretty and is a great way to repurpose the wood.
