We’re not saying that it’s going to be easy, and we’re not even saying that it’s going to get all done at the same time, but that’s what a plan is for. The first thing that we’re going to look at is the fact that you need to write down all of your must-haves. It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement, so it’s important that you already have your wants and expectations written down. This way, you can refer back to them when you get carried away by the renovation fairies, ensuring that you’ve got the basics that you wanted in the beginning. It’s important that you really sit down and think about this before you do anything to your kitchen.
If you have a partner, then you’re going to need to consider their opinion as well, unless they say that they don’t mind and you should do whatever makes you happy. More often than not though, everyone has opinions and it’s important that you are willing to listen to them. Don’t be one of those people who just wants everything the way that they want it, and don’t leave any room for any kind of compromise because that’s not fair.
Take Inspiration From Social Media
If you are struggling to decide what you actually want, then you might want to start looking at some inspiration on social media and other places on the internet. We do understand that most people will tell you not to do this as a lot of them are unrealistic expectations for your budget, but we don’t want to discourage something that you want. It’s important to us that you are getting exactly what your heart desires, as there is always a way to make it happen. It might take a while, especially if you are stuck trying to decide exactly what you want, but it is possible.
For example, if you are stuck between two different kinds of themes, then go online and look at completed kitchens that have that theme. It should help you to understand how it’s going to look when it’s finished if you stick with that, or at least give you an idea.
Do You Need To Extend?
Another question that you need to ask yourself is whether there is enough space in the kitchen as it is, or if you need to extend it. Of course, this is going to be entirely dependent on if you have enough room outside of your home to actually complete an expansion, so we strongly recommend looking at the first before you consider it. It might even be worth getting an expert out to have a look, just to be on the safe side.
If you do decide that you want to go for the expansion, then you need to plan this carefully. A lot of the time this is going to mean that you’re not going to have to go without certain parts of your current kitchen while things are being built, so you’re going to need to plan for that. You’re also going to need to account for how much it costs to have an extension built, and then how much it’s going to cost on top of that to decorate it the same way and so on. It’s a lot of money, but if you have it, and if you want an extension to your kitchen, go for it.
Built In Appliances
Have you thought about whether you want built in appliances or whether you want freestanding ones? For most people when they own their home, built in ones are going to be the better option simply because they look nicer. For example, built in ovens tend to look much nicer than freestanding ones that you can purchase. That’s not to say that you can’t find a freestanding option that looks amazing and gives you the kitchen of your dreams, we’re sure that you can, it just depends on what your dreams are.
Look around at built-in appliances, look at the best ways to get them fitted, look at how much this is going to cost and also think about the practicality of it all. For some people, freestanding is going to be a more practical option because at least if something goes wrong you can pull it out and take a look for the problem yourself. With built in, you’re going to have to get a professional out, but it looks better. So, it depends on what you’re hoping for, what your dream kitchen looks like in your head, and whether or not you would realistically be able to fix a problem like this anyway.
Countertop Options
What countertops do you want? Do you want a dark or a light colour? Do you want wood, stone, or another type? What do you want it to look like? Are you going to match it to the floor or the cupboard fronts? It’s questions like these that you’ve got to think about when choosing countertops. You’ve also got to think about which materials are the most durable, considering it’s going to be around heat, have hot things put on it, getting wet a lot of the time and so much more.
It might even be best to speak to a professional, get their opinion on the countertops and which material you should go for. A lot of the time there are various styles of the same material, so that’s helpful from a design angle at least.
Those Little Details
The final thing that we’re going to mention is that the little details are, of course, important. A lot of people forget about them though, and end up with small details that stick out like a sore thumb because they didn’t account for them. For example, things like kitchen cabinet handles might not seem important, but we can assure you that they will be for the overall aesthetic. You don’t want to forget about the details until the last minute either as this is not going to help anyone. DIY Or Professional Job?
The final thing that we’re going to mention today is whether you’re going to do it yourself, or whether you’re going to get the professionals in. The most common option is to have a mixture of both, working on the things that you can do yourself, and then leaving the ones that you can’t to the professionals. You need to look into different contractors, get some quotes for the work that you want done, and work out how much this is going to cost. You can then work out how much you are willing to do yourself, what you think you will reasonably be able to do and so much more.
It might be easier to hire professionals, but the sense of accomplishment when you do some of it yourself and see the finished product will be overwhelming!
