Another month passed and Hampshire saw a lot more rain than it should do, and I cannot believe it’s July now!! I need Summer and I need some sunshine! I am really missing using the garden like we did last summer.
The plants are trying to come to life, but are really slow, they don’t like the cold!!
Flowers In The Garden
I planted out all my Dahlias this month, I’ve never grown them before really. I had some that I planted directly into the ground last year and I loved it. So this year I purchased a collection from Sarah Raven, and I started them off in pots in the cold frame. I planted them out in this flower bed which will look amazing once all flowering. But I’m struggling with slugs at the moment and they went in very healthy plants….. let’s see how they cope throughout July!
The garden is popping out with colour in various places which is lovely to see, starting to fill up and create some interest. I like flowerbeds that are full, and thick with plants!
My climbing rose started flowering this month which looks amazing climbing up the obelisk. The Bay tree has loved being in the new planters from last year.
It’s an old rose that we inherited from the previous person. I love it as it’s so dainty and peachy pink colouring. It constantly flowers throughout the year.
However it’s been badly attacked by black spot, notice the black marks on the leaves, well it has shredded most of its leaves and they’ve all dropped so it’s now looking very bare. I have treated it with Rose Clear and I just have to hope it can recover itself.
Other Roses that I have are starting to flower as well, I really do love Roses so I hope they don’t lose loads this year. The weather is so up and down, they probably are just complaining about the weather too!!
This is our deep burgundy rose that is very similar to our wedding rose we had. The photos always make it look more red and brighter than it actually is though.
This climbing Rose I have going up the shed has such big heavy flower heads! It has really struggled to take off this rose, so I’m hoping this is its year and I can start to see more blooms and height.
It’s growing up behind the swim chair, so will be lovely once it goes all the way up the shed.
This is the last month of the Foxgloves, they’ve started to drop their flowers now. I do love these flowers as they give a great shot of colour at this time of the year, and you can leave them to dry out and they will self-seed.
Another new flower in this flowerbed is the Weigela Rosea which I picked up as a sad-looking clearance plant, and it’s flowered this month which was lovely to see. Nice shot of pink!
This plant below is a never ending flower! It seems to struggle to flower and then dies back, but then keeps appearing!! It’s a fab looking flower!!
The plants in the planters are starting to fill out too which is nice to see, the lights that I had in the planters look cool at night shining through the plants.
Seedlings and Coldframe
I got my cold frame painted up which made such a difference, much nicer than pallet wood!
Seedings are doing well, growing nicely and I got lots of them out. I seem to have a big problem with slugs this year, even though I have loads of birds in the garden. So some haven’t done too well once in the ground.
I thought this post from Cheat Plant was really good if I was thinking about upgrading my cold frame and adding a greenhouse into the garden!
I have to laugh at this though, one is mine and the other is the same plant but grown by my friend who has studied horticulture!!
Have a guess which one……!!???
Pallet Bug House
I popped a little blog post up about how to make our pallet bug house. It’s a perfect way to use up some old items that aren’t being used anymore and create more places for wildlife. If I had more room I would consider hosting a bee hive in my garden!
Maybe the stag beetle I spotted in the garden the other day loved it! These are endanagered, and as scary as they look they’re completly harmless and it’s great if you add them to the spotted log on the people’s trust for endangered species
I took a picture of these two black birds having a stand off in the bird bath. The brown one is a female and she wasn’t having any of it!! She would not let him near her and in the water!!!
Front Garden
The front garden has been giving me a lot of pleasure this month, everything suddenly popped and gave a shot of colour. Which was lovely for my neighbours to see as it’s looked super sad over the years and I’ve had some lovely comments on it.
If you’ve spotted it on Instagram, we’ve been working really hard to get the new fencing built out the front too. Very pleased with it, something a bit different than the rest of the road with their red brick walls, and I’ve bucked the trend…….but had some nice comments so far so hopefully I’ve not upset them all too much!!
I was hoping June would give us some more flowers and I was right. Things started popping open and growing really well. But I do think they are quite slow this year due to not much sunshine and warmth. Hopefully we have a great July and August……although theres currently black clouds and gales whilst I’m writing this!
Oh wow, how lovely. I do love it when there are a gorgeous variety of flowers in the garden. It makes them look so pretty. Love that you have a bug house too x

Thank you very much, I love seeing what is new to start flowering each week too
Oh wow, both your front and back garden are looking so beautiful. I love the colours and I also love the swinging chair.
Thank you, I’ve tried to keep a constant colour scheme which I’m really pleased with, that swing chair is my happy place!
