You get dust in every room, a contractor who has stopped answering the phone, and a kitchen you have not used in six weeks. Renovation does that to people, and the numbers bear it out.

The 2025 UK Houzz Renovations and Relationships Report, which surveyed more than 600 couples who had renovated in the previous year, found that 16% had thought about separating or divorcing during the work. Among couples together five years or less, that rose to one in five. What almost no one warns you about is that two people in the same house crack at completely different moments.

Why Two People in the Same House Break at Different Moments

One part of a renovation may bother you more than the rest, and that part tends to differ from one person to the next. Some homeowners struggle most with living in the dust, others with the delays, and a third group with the sheer volume of design choices.

You will find one explanation for those different breaking points in astrology. Astrologers sort the twelve signs into four elements, and each element meets pressure in its own way. Your Fire sign neighbour may read a bathroom delay as wasted time, whereas a Water sign reads the same delay as a home that has stopped feeling safe.

You can see it inside one house. The partner who signed off the budget without blinking is often the one who snaps in the second month of plastic sheeting over the sofa. The partner who took the demolition hardest is often the one still calmly reading through the revised quote in week nine. The house and the delays are the same for both of you, and the limits sit in different places.

Your element suggests which way you are likely to lean when the delay lands. You still have to work out what to do about Tuesday’s argument over tile grout, and a written profile cannot help you there. Your chart does not know your contractor, your budget, or which room you have been sleeping in for a month.

Online platforms have made a live reading easy to reach, and most of them let you message an advisor within a few minutes. A psychic chat on Nebula works that way, and you put one specific question to an advisor who reads your chart against the situation you describe. You might tell the advisor that your Aries partner wants to fire the contractor and ask how to handle that conversation. The reply comes back about your partner and your week, instead of a general description of what Aries are like.

Fire Signs and the Problem With the Middle

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius often start a renovation extremely well. Fire signs enjoy demolition week, and the first stretch of any project usually finds these three fully committed and slightly ahead of schedule.

Trouble tends to arrive in the middle weeks, once demolition is done and the rooms stop changing shape. Fire signs run on progress they can see, and a renovation spends most of its length in a stretch that offers none.

  • Aries may push the crew to work faster and create friction doing it.
  • Sagittarius may lose interest and stop opening the emails.
  • Leo tends to hold on longer, mostly because Leo cares how the finished room will look to visitors.

Your fix: Break the timeline into short stages with something visible at the end of each one.

Earth Signs and the Spreadsheet That Rules Everything

Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn usually read the quotes properly. These three often run the best-organised renovations on the street, with the budget tracked and the contractor’s references called.

The cost of all that order is your comfort.

  • Taurus may feel the loss of a settled home more sharply than most, and six weeks without a working kitchen registers as a genuine hardship.
  • Virgo may notice every misaligned tile and struggle to let it go.
  • Capricorn tends to run the project, often silently, and runs out of steam near the end.

Your fix: Set a contingency fund at the start and give yourself permission to spend it without a debate.

Air Signs and the Paralysis of Too Many Options

Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius enjoy the research stage more than anyone. You will see mood boards multiply, tabs stay open for weeks, and the ideas keep getting better.

Then someone finally has to choose one of them.

  • Libra may hold two nearly identical tile samples for a fortnight without choosing.
  • Gemini may change the plan after the order goes in.
  • Aquarius may reject the practical option because thousands of other homes already have it. That stalls more projects than people expect.

Your fix: Give every decision a deadline and let your partner break any tie you cannot break yourself.

Water Signs and the House That Holds Memories

Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces feel a renovation somewhere deeper. Water sign may attach to a house the way other people attach to a person. You may feel it when the kitchen where you learned to cook comes out, and no spreadsheet shows that weight.

  • Cancer may grieve the old room even after loving the new one.
  • Scorpio may watch the contractor closely and find it hard to trust anyone in the house.
  • Pisces may put the paperwork off and hope it settles itself.

Your fix: Photograph the old space properly before demolition and let yourself mark the ending.

Working Out Your Own Pattern Before the Dust Starts

Your sun sign gives you only the broad outline. Your moon and rising placements fill in the detail. Your moon points to what you feel in private, and your rising is the version of you that answers the door to the contractor. Those two often govern how you behave under pressure, which is the state a renovation puts you in for months.

Most people know their sun sign and stop there. Moon and rising need your birth time, usually to within an hour, which you can find on your birth certificate. A birth chart reading will ask for that time and work both out for you.

Couples get more out of this than anyone. Compare your charts before the work begins, and the arguments become easier to see coming, since you learn which trigger belongs to whom.

A Fire and Water pairing shows this most clearly. You will usually argue twice. The first argument comes early, when one of you wants to rip out more than the plan allows and the other one is still saying goodbye to the room. The second comes in the middle weeks, when one of you has stopped sleeping over the budget and the other one has stopped reading the emails.

You can read about zodiac signs and their elements to work out where you and your partner sit. Agree in advance who handles the budget and who handles the contractor.

Your partner may think all of this is nonsense, and the exercise still works. Ask each other which part of the job will be hardest to live with: the dust, the waiting, the money, or the choosing. The answers rarely match, and knowing that in week one saves an argument in week six.

What to Sort Out Before the Skip Arrives

Your chart can hint at which stretch is most likely to test you. Just keep in mind that no reading will shorten a delay or lower a quote, but it may help you spot what you are feeling before it comes out sideways at your partner. Plan around the pattern you already have. If you want a second read on who’s likely to crack first, an advisor can look at both charts together before the work starts. The project then stands a better chance of ending with a room you love and a relationship intact.
