Designing a teen bedroom they will love is a hard task,  but it was a lot easier for us when our son had been in the small box room for a few years, so he was so excited to be able to have space where he would place all the items he wanted, a desk area, wardrobe and space to move around!

As you saw on the last renovation update Tyler’s room was the first one to be finished as we wanted him in there for Christmas. His also was very easy to get together once the carpet was in! His school had a half-day on the last day of school, so he spent the afternoon bringing everything down from his old room and putting it in his new room. It made him have a good clear out and now his new room is pretty empty!

Teen Boys Navy Bedroom Reveal

This reveal is showing how it looks with the furniture in and how we are using the room, we now need to give it some character and make it personal to him.

But he loves this room, and is so happy in it.

Paint Colour

I let Tyler pick the colour for his room and he was quite set of Navy from the start. He sat with me one evening and went through the paint colour charts and straight away picked out ‘Basalt’ from  Little Greene colour paint range. I didn’t want the whole room painted in a dark colour as this room doesn’t get any direct sunlight, as the sun hits the wall where the navy is and then works it’s way around to the back of the house. So he needed a lighter colour to work with this navy.

B&Q had an offer of 3 for 2 on and I have used Valspar paint in my house so much and love that you can colour match any colour. So I picked up a sample of this, along with lots of different beiges for my main room. Unknowingly he picked the beige that I had picked for the rest of the extension! So that made it easier for me!

So it’s Valspar paint but colour matched to Basalt – Little Greene and Donkey Ride – Earthborn Paints

A neatly organised Boys’ Navy Bedroom with a single bed, grey bedding, a wooden desk holding a computer monitor, keyboard, mouse, and a printer by a window with patterned curtains. The wall behind the desk is dark blue.

Desk Area

If this was the only thing in his room he would be happy!! But joking aside it is very important to have a workable desk in his room. He is 15 and currently revising for his GCSE’s and this gives him a perfect space to revise in. He is also planning on a career in computing so it’s a big part of his life.

My Niece suggested a desk in front of the window as it’s lovely to have natural light on your desk and yourself when revising. Much nicer than staring at a wall for hours whilst revising. But I knew this wouldn’t work completely for him with the computer parts. But I then thought, an L-Shaped desk works really well. It gives him a space where he can revise and leave his school work out, then a dedicated spare for his computer parts. He loves this setup, and by having space where he can leave his revision out means he can pick up and start from where he left off. We purchased the desk from Amazon, arriving flat packed but it was easy enough to build and comes in a few different colours.

A tidy L-shaped desk with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer on top. The setup sits in a carpeted boys' bedroom next to a window with white curtains, while a desktop computer with glowing lights rests underneath.

I do wish we had a smaller radiator for this room though, it’s very well insulated and the radiator sticks out too much. The plumber just picked the radiator size for this room, and I didn’t think to ask about it. It’s turned down so low all the time as it’s so big and pumps out so much heat! It wouldn’t have looked so overpowering in the room either if it was smaller

Storage

Tyler has never had a wardrobe! Every room he’s had has always been too small for a wardrobe and we’ve always used drawers for his clothes, so this was important for me to get for this room! We purchased this one from MADE, it’s a scandi style wardrobe with Oak door fronts with white sides. It’s tied in the desk colour scheme and white of his bed frame. With hanging space inside and a pull out drawer at the bottom.

A tidy teenage boy’s bedroom with a wooden wardrobe, a wall-mounted TV, a bed partially visible, a desk by the window, and sheer curtains letting natural light brighten this navy bedroom.

Lighting

Lighting was a little tricky due to the vaulted ceiling and a small flat section we needed to have to hide the ceiling joists! So the lighting rose was always going to be slanted. We couldn’t have a lampshade that was covered all the way around as the light would only shine in one small area of the room, so picked a lampshade that was metal and open. The light then creates a nice pattern on the walls too! We went for the cage style black pendant light from Castlegate Lighting for around £30

As the ceiling is vaulted, the ceiling rose sits wonky but as the light hangs down it corrects it’s self and hangs straight.

A black wire-frame lampshade with a geometric design hangs from the ceiling, surrounding a single exposed light bulb—an ideal accent for a teenage boys' bedroom or modern boys' navy bedroom with its bold, contemporary style. The background is a plain, light-coloured ceiling.

Woodwork

I wanted a lovely sized window board for him to have as it gives him somewhere to place his bits and bobs, but also makes the windows look bigger. We needed to have a permanent way of privacy for him in this room as these windows look straight out onto the driveway, so opted for plain net curtains

A light blue wooden sign on a windowsill reads, You Really Are MY FAVOURITE BROTHER with two white stars on each side—perfect for a teenage boy's bedroom or boys' navy bedroom. Sheer white curtains and part of the window are visible behind.

I was kindly sent the window boards and skirting from *Skirting World and painted them using Dulux ONCE satinwood paint. These are the same ones we have around the rest of the extension, I love the height of them and extra detail.

An empty room with a black feature wall, beige walls, and a window on the left is ready for home renovation. Painting supplies, paint tins, tools, and tape line the bare floor near the wall in preparation for updates.

Curtains

This room is quite plain in colour at the moment so it’s nice to add some pattern to the room and I think adding it in the curtains is a lovely way to do this. I was kindly able to pick a pair of curtains from Terrys Fabrics who have a very large selection of curtains on their website. These grey *Byron ready-made curtains from Terrys Fabrics ticked all the boxes for him. Pulling in the white from the furniture and the grey from the carpet. For under £50 these curtains are fantastic quality and hang nicely. If you prefer they also come in the opposite colourway for a darker look.
A close-up of a grey and white fabric with a geometric zigzag and chevron pattern, perfect for a navy bedroom or teenage boys’ space, hanging near a white windowsill in a softly lit room.

If I can, I try and purchase curtains with eyelet as I find them much more durable and can take being open and closed often. These curtains aren’t blackout ones but I think they’re pretty thick and shut out a good amount of light anyway.

I paired them up with this geometric curtain pole from Dulemn Mill as I thought it worked really well with the lampshade too.

A geometric metal curtain rail with a black, polygon-shaped finial holds up grey and white patterned curtains, adding a bold accent to a teenage boys' bedroom or navy bedroom with light-coloured walls and ceiling.

Carpet

We picked up a really decent carpet remnant from Carpet Barn and Kev fitted it. Don’t be afraid to ask to them to cut a remnant roll down, they’re happy to do so as long as it leaves them with enough to make another room-sized roll. We saw a massive roll that we liked and it worked out at £150 to do his room, and the carpet is very good. It has a silky feeling underfoot to it, which was one of his requests from a carpet! We purchased our underlay from Amazon which seems to be good value and thickness too.

A sparsely furnished room with beige and dark green walls, grey carpet flooring, three power sockets on one wall, and a ceiling light with a wireframe lampshade—one room done in this house extension project.

Dead Space

The one part that I am a little disappointed on with this room is this space at the end of the bed and in between the door. This was the only space we could put his wardrobe which is right by the door, but that isn’t too bad as it blocks people from the front door seeing straight in. But then it leaves this area at the end of his bed where his TV is empty. The TV had to go here and we’ve placed an ariel and socket for the TV here too.

Any ideas on what I could do with this part to make it more interesting or am I worrying too much!?

Bright, modern boys' bedroom with a striped bed, wooden wardrobe, wall-mounted TV, wooden door, and desk. Patterned curtains on the window and grey carpet create a stylish navy bedroom feel against the neutral walls.

Accessories

Now we have space and he’s happily using it, I think we now need to style it and make it even more workable for him. The room needs some character and interesting pieces put into it!

Tyler loves his new room and often says to me how much he loves it. It’s helping him so much to have a welcoming space to revise in.

*I was sent some products in return for featuring in this room, but all thoughts are honest and of my own. Post contains affiliate links where I earn a small amount of commission for recommending you to the products should you purchase them.
