A couple of months ago I wrote a post about creating shade in our garden, I was stuck on what product we should use to create shade in our garden. So I asked people’s advice on my social media and I got a real mix of options and opinions.

We decided to purchase a parasol due to the flexibility it gave us, and with our extension being built soon we didn’t want anything permanent for now. Once the product was decided I needed to whittle down the choices. Listening to people’s advice about the parasol, I needed to make sure it was solid, well-weighted down, and large enough to cover your area.

Being pretty much a South facing garden we needed to make sure the parasol did the job well, so we went outside and stood with a sheet to see where the sun settled over the patio and what difference a parasol would make, and area covered. You will be surprised how little shade you do get from a parasol, and depending on where the sun goes you will need to be able to adjust the parasol to suit.

*See bottom of post for 2024 update

A cosy patio with a wicker sectional sofa, grey cushions, and floral pillows sits under a large beige SEGLARÖ Parasol from IKEA. Flower pots, blooming plants, and a brick house with glass doors complete the sunny outdoor scene.

We needed to go large! A small parasol wasn’t going to cover enough, and we also needed it to be adjustable. A fixed parasol was never going to cover the area all day long, and there would be parts of the day that the sofa wasn’t covered.

Video After Nearly 2 Years

The prices really vary with parasols, but I found the IKEA SEGLARÖ Parasol and at only £125 this looked brilliant.

Features I loved

  • It was very large measuring 330 cm in length by 240 cm
  • The fabric has a UPF rating of 50+ which blocks out 98% of the ultraviolet radiation
  • It has an easy 360 degree turn
  • Air vents reduce wind pressure and allow heat to circulate
  • Easily opened by a crank handle
  • Light showerproof
  • Aluminium so won’t rust
  • Strap and buckle to keep everything tightly in place when folded

It’s really big for the car, we have a Ford Galaxy and it filled from the front to just into the boot area, so be prepared for that!

A long IKEA SEGLARÖ Parasol box is placed diagonally inside a car, stretching from the back seat to the front passenger seat. Sunlight streams through the windows, with buildings visible outside.

Weighted Base

You must purchase the SVARTÖ parasol base (stopped selling now) which is large at around 1m in size, so keep this in mind when you’re thinking where to place your parasol. Ours isn’t really where we would like it as it makes it a bit awkward but you really have to work with where the sun goes!

Four black plastic SEGLARÖ umbrella base weights are assembled around a metal pole on a tiled patio, near a wicker outdoor furniture piece and a modern outdoor lamp—perfect for your next IKEA parasol review.

It comes in 4 pieces that slot together easily, but then you must fill it with either water which doesn’t weigh as much, or 64 litres of sand to make the base weigh 90kg!

It was all very easy and quick to put together too.

A large cardboard box containing unassembled parts of an IKEA SEGLARÖ parasol lies open on the grass next to an outdoor patio set with black wicker chairs and a table.

How Has It Handled Being Up?

The biggest problem people mentioned to me about their cantilever parasols was it not standing up to any wind. The instructions say you must not put it up in windy conditions so I am aware and I always take it down every night or when we’re not at home.

It moves around a lot! When I first started using it I was so paranoid about it moving around, but it’s meant to do this. It has movement in it so it can handle a breeze and is not fixed in one place.

UPF Rating 50+

The fabric has a UPF rating of 50+ which blocks out 98% of the ultraviolet radiation and you can tell! It can be such a hot day but the moment you sit under the IKEA SEGLARÖ parasol the heat calms and it’s so comfortable under there. A perfect place to get away from the sun and I think I would have regretted not getting one with this protection.

Close-up view from underneath a large beige SEGLARÖ Parasol, showing its metal support ribs and central pole against a background of sky, trees, and part of a building—perfect for an IKEA parasol review.

Crank and Lift Handle

When I was in IKEA I was really impressed by the quality of the SEGLARÖ parasol but also how solid the crank handle is and how easy it is to lift up and down. This makes putting up and down the parasol so easy.

Close-up of a crank handle attached to the pole of a tan SEGLARÖ patio parasol, with a blue sky and white clouds in the background. Some green foliage and part of a white structure appear—perfect for an IKEA Parasol Review. A hand holding the handle of an IKEA SEGLARÖ crank mechanism attached to an outdoor parasol on a patio, with a sofa and plants in the background.

360 Degree Turn

This is a big plus point, without this function, we wouldn’t be able to cover the sofa area all day in the shade. We can easily turn the parasol around the patio as the sun moves throughout the day.

It’s so easy to turn, this is without the cover over the base but you see the little holes around the pole? Take the little key out so you can then twist the pole and lock the key back into place.

Close-up of the base of an IKEA SEGLARÖ outdoor parasol stand with four segmented, plastic weight containers arranged around a central metal pole. The containers have multiple ridges and compartments for added stability. Parasol Review approved.

When one section of the sofa gets sun on, then it can be turned around to cover it! It also made placing the parasol in the correct place so much easier, as we could adjust the base so it was tucked up against the planters and then just move the parasol around.

This was with the parasol in one place,

A grey wicker outdoor sectional sofa with grey cushions and floral throw pillows surrounds a matching glass-topped coffee table on a patio, shaded by an IKEA SEGLARÖ parasol, next to a brick wall and greenery.

Then I moved it around on the base to this position,

A cosy patio features a large beige SEGLARÖ Parasol from IKEA shading grey wicker furniture with colourful cushions, a glass-top table, potted plants, and blooming flowers, set against a brick wall and white fence on a sunny day.

Then it shaded this end of the sofa!

It’s VERY Tall!

This is the only downside to the SEGLARÖ parasol. We purchased a cover for it so that it could be protected against bad weather and as it’s so large there isn’t anywhere we can store it over the winter, so we’re just cover it over. But even my 6ft 2″ husband has to stand on the wall next to it to be able to get the cover over the top!! If you can’t do something like this, I am not sure how you can cover it over easier. But this must be the same with all parasols this large.

Overall Thoughts

I am over the moon with the IKEA SEGLARÖ parasol, the total price including the cover was £180 and for all the functions to it, it’s a great price. I saw standard parasols with no UV protection and no 360 degrees turn on it for this price. We have used it so much since we got it!

Update For 2024 For The IKEA SEGLAGO

It’s still going strong after being purchased in 2019. We always cover ours over when not in use, and it stays covered all winter. I have seen that the prices have gone up a lot since we purchased it. It’s now £250 instead of £125, but I still think it’s a great parasol for that new price. They also have a new style parasol base, which I do like the look of as it looks very tidy, using concrete blocks, rather than a plastic base. You can also have it in a dark grey colour now, and not just the cream version!

You can also now purchase a new fabric canopy for the IKEA SEGLAGO which people have been asking for ages! If you’re one has ripped but the actual parasol is still perfect you can now change the fabric, so far it’s only the dark grey canopy, but better than nothing!

Hi Steph, can you let me know what cover you got for it? Can’t find one with the right circumference. Cheers Andrea

    • Just replied to the other comment, but I will reply to this one too! Its the one that IKEA sold for it

Iv bought the very large parasol from ikea but can’t find a cover for it

      • Ah we got ours from IKEA at the time, maybe they’ve stopped selling them which is rubbish if they have

  3. Hi, I would like to get one, but I’m wandering of the movement not in the windy weather but in the regular weather, you’re now using it for long time what’s do think of the movement is it bad?

    • Hi, I think they need a little movement in them to be able to cope with the wind. It’s still standing and can take a battering when shut! We always put it down when it’s windy

    • Can I ask which cover you got for it. Can’t find one anywhere that fits the circumference?

    Hi!

Lovely review! We just bought the parasol but the bases was sold out , they told us to come back but still sold out absolutely everywhere :(! Do you think we could get any base (big enough) to use instead of the Svarto one? as all the IKEA’s local to me wont be coming back in stock until August and even then they don’t know 🙁

    • Thanks! I am not sure, your just need to make sure the base shape sits the same into the different base. If you see on my picture the feet of the parasol sit into the base easily. There might be something that works with it

  5. Hi Steph, we’ve just got one of these today! Which cover did you get? Is it an Ikea one as well?

Hi, I bought one yesterday and it’s already broken
I dont understand…….. did you have any trouble with the locking system? As it allows the parasol to move quite a bit, ours just swang around slowly and broke the wire????

        • No, ours has movement in it but doesn’t swing around at all. The pin at the base needs to be pushed right into the holes to keep it from doing a 360, sometimes we need to wiggle it around to find the correct line up. But it should spin around.

  6. Thanks for the review! The only negative I managed to find online is one person on the Ikea Croatia website, who says, that after just a few rains saw rust showing underneath the base. I assume you have used it in the rain as well? It also doesn’t make sense if the base is made of aluminium (unless it’s not, can’t confirm on Ikea website…).

    • It’s been left outside since we’ve got it. Just have the cover for the parasol, it all looks good to me!

      • We had this Umbrella for about 8 years, in that time we replaced the cloth top and a new base cover and the umbrella winter cover. Have to say for all the time we’ve had it we loved it until yesterday. The shaft for the handle broke and there is no replacement part from IKEA and no part number to find the item online and was told by IKEA all I can do is purchase a totally new umbrella. I did find a potential company in France that manufactures this part but haven’t been able to talk to them yet. I am shocked that IKEA can’t provide the part for sale to their customer’s.

  7. Hi, we bought one 2 years ago.
The krank broke in our hand. In fact, there is a piece of metal which secure the Krank to the wheel inside the parasol.

On the IKEA , website, no information to find this small piece of metal. I will be unahppy to have to discard it just for that
Any thought to help us to replace it

    Best regards
    Gilles, Fanny

    • Ever so sorry but I wouldn’t have a clue, ours is still working fine so not had to fix it.

  8. Hi, I am thinking of buying one, but I have a doubt. How much space do you need to open?In my case, it will be very close to the table and I have no space to turn it. Will it touch the table when he opens or closes it?
    Thank you very much

    • You have to open it when it’s collapsed down, then lift the handle to angle it up in the air. It does need room to be able to open and close it

  9. Hi Steph – thanks for writing this up! It looks great on your patio, and we’ve bought this today for delivery from Ikea in two weeks’ time. Unfortunately they had no weights available for delivery, so we’re going to have to buy some weights from elsewhere.

The Ikea description says you can use concrete blocks (total weight 90kg) to weigh it down, so I’m at least comforted that they recognise we might not be using their own weights.

Do you know if the metal legs between the weights are a standard width on all parasols? The sixth image on these weights on Amazon say the gaps between the weights is 4cm. Would that fit this parasol? https://smile.amazon.co.uk/BB-Sport-Parasol-weights-cantilever/dp/B0875ZPDCZ/

Sorry to use you as Ikea customer service, but from your experience using it you undoubtedly have more knowledge of it than an Ikea call centre agent would!! Thank you.

    • Hi, I don’t think these ones will fit. Take a look at my close up image of the base and parasol……the circular bit in the middle is empty for the parasol to fit in. The base you’re looking at has lots of plastic in the middle. Each IKEA weight is individual and they click together around the parasol centre and legs. For your reference, the IKEA parasol legs are just over 3cm width. I hope that helps

    • Great review, thank you. I’m planning on getting one of these this week but might need my brother’s estate car. I’m assuming that the parasol is 240cm high, can you remember if the packaging added much more? Thanks.

      • I think IKEA put the packaging sizes on the website, I’m still very happy with the parasol

  10. Hi Steph,
Thans for your review. It is very helpful. I am thinking of buying this Umbrella. Can you please confirm if 240 * 330 is the total dimention of Umbrella or only the fabric? I cannot find the info on IKEA webpage. Is the fabric rectangular or square? If rectangular which side is next to the stick. Thanks

    • Hi, thanks for finding us! The fabric is a rectangle shape and the longest length is next to the stick. That size you’ve said, is the size of the umbrella

  11. I know slightly off topic, but those cushions are quite striking against the grey of the patio set, they look great.

    • We’re so pleased with it after working so hard on the garden too, gives us a lovely space

  12. I’ve been looking for something just like this, I’m going to check it out now – it looks fantastic.

  15. What a beautiful garden. Love all your furniture and that parasol is amazing for the price.

    • Yes I am over the moon with the coverage, I am so glad we didn’t go smaller

    • Brilliant price for it, thanks I have always wanted a space like this outside so I am so happy to have it after all these years!
