Whilst renovating my house over the past few months I have looked into so many different options for our new kitchen. Making sure we have as much as we can that we wanted in the new space. Since thinking about what kitchen we would love the trends have changed so much already. But what I do love is people are pushing the boundaries more, going for styles they love, rather than keeping it neutral (not that there is anything wrong with neutral!) but people are having more of what they love now.

Kitchen Interior Design Ideas

I wanted to pull together a few kitchen interior design ideas which I think are brilliant to have in your new kitchen.

Colour

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the colour! My Instagram feed is full of colour and it’s lovely. People, including myself, are adding colour into their kitchens. Navy has been the biggest kitchen colour I’ve seen making the biggest impact on kitchen interior design, but I love how different people take this colour on and how they work with it. Adding different accessories instantly changes the look of the kitchen. Take a look at the Hashtag #NavyKitchen on Instagram and you can see so many different ways this colour works.

Or do something even more different and go for a light blue kitchen like me! It’s currently being fitted now!

A blue cupboard door, part of a recent house extension, partially blocks a wall socket, with a white plug awkwardly inserted into the socket behind the door.

Clever Lighting

Lighting is really important and it’s something I have thought more about in this renovation. Being able to place new lighting in our new rooms has allowed me to plan easily where the lighting should be placed. There are so many different styles of lighting to pick from, try to make sure you keep the theme running throughout the room though as this brings the room together and keeps the tone together.

There are so many different styles to pick from like, vintage lighting, bright spotlights, glass chandeliers, pendants, wall lights and lamps. I’ve put together a mixture of different types of lighting in my home but I have kept the gold theme running throughout them all to tie it all together.

A modern chandelier with multiple glass globes hangs above a dining table with beige chairs. A window in the new house extension reveals trees and a building at dusk, whilst warm light from the chandelier creates patterns on the ceiling.

Pantries

These are super popular with kitchen interior design planning now which I love as they used to be popular! My house was built in the ’60s and my neighbour’s house had one built into the kitchen as a must-have. I wish it hadn’t gone out of fashion as they’re brilliant! A full-height area where you can store all your dry food and have everything in one place.

So modern new kitchens are being built with these full height larders installed now, being able to fill them up with glass jars and shelves of well-organised food. I love it!

Hidden Items

Hiding kitchen items is a big thing with kitchen trends, making sure the worktops are clear of items so you can easily clean the is very appealing! But I do think it’s more of an ascetic thing because if everything is hidden away in cupboards then there is less uncoordinated clutter on the sides and it looks so much nicer clear.

Built-in Appliances

I think kitchens are becoming more of furniture rather than practical. Picking a beautiful piece of furniture that looks nice and has clean lines. By having built-in appliances you keep the smooth lines, uninterrupted units and looks much more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen.

Co-Ordinating Small Appliances

If you do have your small appliances out on show you have more chance now of getting them to co-ordinate with your kitchen design. I’m seeing more and more brands making a kettle but now offering it in more than one colour. I did still struggle for a white and gold kettle that I loved (let me know if you see one!) but gone are the days where you only got a white one or chrome one!

Open Plan

A person stands cooking in a cosy kitchen, possibly after a big refurbishment, while another hand holds a coffee cup and a colour swatch book at a white counter. Two mugs, a mobile, a pen, and chopping boards rest on the worktop.

*Waiting for doors to be installed in this picture!!!

Open plan has been in for years, but it’s becoming more and more of an important factor when looking for a house. We’ve only been using our open plan extension for a couple of months and we love it. It’s so much more of a sociable family space, we spend more time together and much more connected.

Letting In Light

Keeping with the open-plan theme, kitchen trends are loving natural light. Making sure windows are large, patio doors leading out into the garden and making the garden more of an extra room (weather dependant!) People are happily installing larger openings in their kitchen interior design plans and sacrificing cupboard space or wall space for that extra larger opening!

Have fun designing your new kitchen, it’s your home so pick the things you love

  1. There are so many things to think about I usually either rush in and get the first thing I like (which I usually regret) or spend ages looking at everything and struggle to make a decision. I am keeping this link for when I come to do my kitchen to help me!

  2. There’s so many things to think about when designing a kitchen isn’t there? But it looks like you’ve got most of it covered. I’ve started to introduce yellow into my kitchen to brighten it up – I also love colour! But I’m planning on changing the feature wallpaper and updating it this year. Love you lights hanging from the ceiling – they’re gorgeous!

  3. I love coloured kitchens, we’ve just had ours put in 6 months ago and we went for charcoal grey with white worktops and brushed gold handles! It looks a dream! Caitylis x x
